It's Not Fair! It's a Fair!

Two weeks ago there was a Health and Safety Fair here in Boro Park. Ironically, it wasn't healthy, safe, nor was it really fair. We attended this fair last year and two years ago. It was held in a public school. The booths were indoors and the animals and activities were in the spacious yard.

This year... the public school has some construction going on, so the fair was held in a local Bais Yaakov. That's where the "unfair" comes in. It was SO tight and crowded. The school yard was tiny. The pony rides consisted of the horse rotating on its axis (the previous years, the kids rode the pony acrss the entire huge yard.) The activities, like moonwalk, were taking place on the sidewalk in front to the school. Too many people + narrow sidewalk = no chance to even approach the rides.
The indoor booths were all on different floors. You had to go up and down many steps to get to everything.

It wasn't healthy or safe, either- the petting zoo was held in the lunch room... and they were selling pizza there! Half the room full of farm animals and reptiles, and on the other side, 4 feet away, were tables full of people eating.
They gave lollipops to the kids. I know I'm one of the only mothers around here who doesn't give lollies, but, come on- at a health fair?
Then the room where the booths were held- there was a guy playing Simon Says with kids. He had a microphone and was SO loud, that I couldn't even hear anything at the couple of booths I approached. Whatever.
The biggest safety hazard was that the only exit out of this thing was a narrow corridor. It was the entrance as well. They set up tables with registration info and stuff. And there were people standing at the tables, filling out their info. So in one corridor- the only exit- there were five columns of traffic: the volunteers, the tables, the form-fillers, the comers, the goers. YIKES!

But despite all that, the boys did manage to have some fun.
Gedalya was enamoured with all the animals!

He hit it off well with the lizard. :)

For some reason, Zusha didn't want to touch any animals. Very different from the previous years. But he did pet the turtle.

Zusha on the pony ride... he chose the smaller horse.

Gedalya chose the bigger one. Brave boy!

Hopefully next year they will have it in a public school again so we can go and have fun!

  2. Yeah, he's all over animals! He gets it from both me and my husband.
Zusha loves animals, too, but he doesn't go totally nuts when he sees one, and he doesn't feel the need to touch every single animal that comes into his field of view.
    LOL
