abc123

Inspired by Zusha's birthday, I went back and updated some birthday posts over the past year. I put up a "Mazal Tov" post on the kid's actual birthday and often I neglect to follow up with party photos. So...

Zusha turns 6
Gedalya turns 4
Adi turns 2

*****

Today is the first day of summer vacation for Zusha! Yay! Too bad we couldn't really celebrate it properly because he was sick for... it'll be a week tomorrow. He missed Friday, Sunday and Monday at school. Tuesday was his last day, ending at 12:00 so I sent him an hour late. We went to the doctor and Zusha was prescribed antibiotics. Not the best way to start the summer or to end kita beis/first grade, but it is what it is. Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in today. The poor child just drops off to sleep mid-day in his clothes, goes to bed at 8 without having energy to get into pajamas, has no appetite and is cranky.

In the mini "canyon" near our house, where the train tracks are, there is a mini forest. Just lots of natural vegetation. Which is cool. But what was even cooler was discovering a neat little patch of naturally growing daffodils on the slope!

And tulips as well!

This isn't a tulip, but he was hanging out near them, so I guess he was pretending to be one. :)

We also had a checkup for Adi the day we took Zusha to the doctor, and she is 29 lbs and 36 inches! That's in the 50th percentile for weight and 48th for height! She isn't underweight anymore. :D This is the first time I ever had to worry about a kid being on the lower end of the chart. Both my boys never
left the top quarter for either weight or height.

Gedalya observing dandelions on our block. We counted them every day, and there were about 10 new ones every day. At its' height, there were about 150 dandelions in front of this one house.

And soon enough, it was white fluff heaven!

Yesterday there were, not one, but TWO car crashes on our block. First one was on our corner (we're on a dead end, so only have one corner.) An elderly lady plowed into a pedestrian walk/don't walk light. I gather no one but her was hurt.
There were three ambulances and two fire trucks (for preventive purposes, I gather.) It was scary to see how the entire front of the car was bashed in. Imagine if someone was waiting to cross the street! There are always people around, kids, babies in carriages. It's a miracle no one but the driver was hurt.
I reinforced to the kids how important street safety is and how alert you have to be, because tragedy can happen even if you are doing everything right.

Then, at night, I was putting Adi to sleep when I heard a screeeeeech and BOOM. I sucked in my breath and held it while listening to people come out of their houses. My upstairs neighbor said, "Somebody call Hatzola!" By then there was a crowd, and I went out to see what happened. Seems like a car drove into our dead end block at full speed. There was a car parked by the fence at the end of the road, so the speeding car crashed into that.
It seems that the man didn't realize it was a dead end. I have no other explanation, because why else would someone speed like that on a dead end?

Hatzola came within 2 minutes. It never fails to amaze me. The cars were both dented- badly. But the driver didn't seem hurt.
And then the car caught fire. People called the fire department and kept saying that the trees can catch fire. They were debating whether it is safer to wait or put the fire out with someone's hose.
Until the fire trucks arrived and put out the car fire, I was kinda nervous. What if there was an explosion right in front of our house? *Shudder*

A good reminder not to be too relaxed around streets!

A friendly cat we encountered a couple of months ago...

Adi was in cat love.

Don't you hate it when you discover a product you love and it gets discontinued?
Almost a year ago I began cloth diapering, and had to sample the whole buffet: AIOs, pockets, fitteds with covers, prefolds with covers. I bought popular brands, less famous brands, handmade stuff, custom orders.
I kept up with cloth diapering 99% exclusively till our move.
Now the washing machine is so out of the way of the rest of the house, I can't do laundry on the fly. I have to schedule myself a 20 minute stretch so I can empty the washer of the previous stuff, load the dryer, load the washer with new stuff, etc.
I don't have as much time to fold, so I often pull out a diaper from a pile in a basket to use. The multi-part dipeys are harder to grab on the fly... you have to find the parts that match. And I found myself reaching for a disposable way too often. So I decided to cull my collection.
I weeded out the fitteds and the covers and left only AIOs and some pockets (only the pockets that open on both sides so I don't have to pull out the soaked inner.) The pockets that open on one side have been designated as swim diapers.

Given my reduced volume of diapers, I needed to buy more of the type I liked. Only to search for them and discover they are out of production. :(

Which is unfortunate, because although there are  still some available online, they are all size Extra Small. I was able to find some size Large and ordered two. But I hate how companies discontinue popular products!

Today, for a Change

I'm always trying to catch up, always feeling behind... trying to remember what we did based on the photos that I took. Well, today we did nothing. By the time I get around to blogging about this week of summer, my summary of Wednesday will be "We just hung around and did nothing special."
But nothing is special. :)
Here's our day.

I washed, dried and put away diapers and wipes. No diaper laundry till Sunday! I'm enjoying this cloth diapering business! and wipes... oh, how much money I'm saving on the wipes! I have 91 cloth wipes total, and it cost me $41. It seems like a lot of money, but I'd only get 16 packages of disposable wipes for that price (and that's only when they are on sale!). 16 packages would last us about 4 months. These flannel cuties

FRIENDLY, HAIRY, DANCING, BAT MONSTERS, 2 Dozen Flannel Cloth Baby Wipes, Wash Cloths, Blue Monster Print, Set of 24
2 dozen Flannel Cloth Baby Wipes, Wash Cloths, Owls, Owl, Mushroom Print, Pink Green Brown Orange, Set of 24

will last a lot longer!

We redeemed a prize for out S2H Replays! We got 900 points (that's 900 minutes of exercise!) and exchanged them for 25 free photos at Snapfish. The boys chose several of their Paint Shop drawings and craft photos to print out. They have albums into which they will put the photos. Isn't that a great prize? I can just imagine the look on their faces when they receive an actual physical photo of the picture they drew on a computer. This isn't the first prize we got, though. We redeemed 680 points for a $5 Toys 'R' Us gift card and took a trip to the bay to buy a toy with our card. We found a great one for exactly $5. :)

We're taking it easy this week because I am sick. We didn't go anywhere special. Just to a couple of stores and that's it.

Adel had only one therapy session this week! She will have one tomorrow and one on Friday, too. Since we went to the geneticist on Monday, we canceled everything.for that day. Tuesday we usually have occupational therapy, physical therapy and special ed. PT is on vacation, special ed rescheduled for Friday, and only the OT showed up. Today was supposed to be OT again, but her car broke down. Tomorrow is special ed, all others are out! Friday is special ed as well. Adel is like a free bird!

Adi has a few new tricks.
She walks around on her knees. No holding on, just like regular walking, but it's on her knees. She knows she's too cool, because when I tell the boys to look how Adi is walking, she grins to herself, pretends to ignore us and ups the ante.:D

She loves to talk to us in a conversational way. She figured out what gets responses and says those things often. Like, if she says hi, we will answer. So she just says it randomly throughout the day. If I know our special ed teacher, she will be discouraging the excessive "hi"s from Adel, but I love them! Her newest response-getting phrase is, "Yeah? Yeah? Yeah?" She knows someone will answer her, "Yeah, Adi!"
And a new spontaneous word! We didn't drill this into her head, she just said it out of nowhere. "A boo."

Any guesses?

It's "a ball!" Cool, huh? :D

Dandelion Fluff

Today we heard a boy blowing a whistle outside and Gedalya remarked, "That's the shofar because it's almost Purim!"

And indeed. It's Elul. When that happened, I am not sure.
I was in Pathmark and noticed on the checkout screen that the Bamba snacks we bought were discounted by 10 cents. The word "ROSHHASHANAH" was there, next to the -10. Rosh Hashana? What? At first I thought it was comical, much like the time they had matzah on sale for Chanuka many years ago. But then I realized that Pathmark is giving me a reality check. It really is almost Rosh Hashana!
It's Elul, and my baby girl's birthday is in Tishrei. Next month. Gedalya will be 4 1/2 in three weeks, on Rosh Hashana. Zusha will be starting Kita Beis. He will be in school till 4:30 this year. Yipes.

Time is moving, and I'm not sure to where. As I mentioned to one of Adel's therapists, I'm living a month or more behind the times. Every Thursday evening I shake my head in disbelief that tomorrow is erev shabbos. Every time, without exception. Wasn't it just Sunday? I mean, the Sunday before last? Wasn't it?

I had so much planned for the summer. And we did a lot of it. There were only a handful of days that I felt we didn't use to the full potential. But... but... there is so much more!

There is so much I want to write about. I have posts and post all neat in my head, but then they get old. Should I write about Zusha's birthday (2 1/2 months ago) or about Adel's first haircut (over three months ago)? Should I finally put up the photos from MARCH?? Should I update about Adel's new words and tricks before she moves onto greater stuff and leaves her old tricks in the dust? Or maybe I should fold laundry lest the therapists think we live off that giant mound on the little table in the corner.

Maybe I should just let that go and write about the recent happenings. I try. :)  I did have a post all ready to be assembled- all the photos uploaded. And then it got erased when the browser froze. It was from a gastroenterologist visit three weeks ago. I'm resuscitating it now. :D

I'm having a hard time keeping up because as I mentioned a couple posts down, we are venturing down a cloth diaper journey. It's exciting and fun, and has kept me busy. The three extra laundry loads a week, consisting of a rinse-wash-rinse cycle has left me little time to post. But I hope to catch up with our summer stories on this here blog.:)
