"Mama, a Polar Bear is Eating Our Cheese!"

One day, on chol hamoed, the kids threw some old cheese out the window for the cats. The cats didn't come to eat it and the kids went off to do their own thing.
A while later, Gedalya was at the window, looking outside, when I heard him ask calmly, "Mama, who's eating our cheese, a bear?"

I was busy with Yom Tov cooking, so at first I answered, "Yeah, Gedalya... a bear. Wow."

Then I processed the statement. I ran to the window and saw:

and quickly ran to get the camera. I was pretty sure it was either a possum or a giant rat. I preferred to believe the former. A google search later on confirmed that it was indeed a possum.

The boys stood on the windowsill, waving at the creature and shouting, "Berele! Shnei Berele! Hi!!! We love you!"

Although a possum is pretty boring compared to camels outside your window!

  1. oh my! what an adventure. you really have to pay attention to what the kiddies are saying! especially yours, as they seem to attract adventure LOL. i grew up in 'possum' town...and raccoon land and more.

once my dad ran off the road in a truck. he recognized a highly poisonous snake slithering across (or so he insists) and he tried to run it over.

    yeah, go dad.

  2. Yup, raccoons visit us as well. Those aren't so rare here- I never knew there were so many raccoons! But this is the first time seeing an opossum. I wonder where he lives, and how he gets around inconspicuously.
