It was a typical bedtime routine in our home. Finally I gave up on putting Adi to bed the normal way and put her in the swing on super high. The kids were hitting each other over the head with a toy so I took it away. Gedalya ran out of bed to rescue his beloved possession. Zusha, having no one to fight with, fell asleep. Adel fell asleep in her swing. Gedalya thrashed on the floor beside me, demanding his toy back, and fell asleep doing so. Hillel went to lie down as well (it was 17 Tammuz and he was fasting.) Even the hamsters were still asleep!
I couldn't believe my luck. In the span of five minutes, I went from wild child drama llama house to total silence. I was the only person awake in the house!
Well, that lasted for uh, not so long.
Adel awoke in her swing, protesting the unusual sleep conditions. Gedalya turned on the hardwood floor and began to cry in his uncomfortable sleep. The hamsters crawled out of their hideaways and headed up to exercise. Then Hillel got up to get ready to go to shul.
As I carried Gedalya off to bed and assured Adel I'll take her in a moment, I was half waiting for Zusha to awaken and join the party. Surprisingly, he did not. Gedalya went right back to sleep, and I nursed Adel to sleep as well. The hamsters weren't really bothering anyone by being awake.
So, that is the story of the ironies of sleep.
