The Whole Long Story...

Zusha is sick again. How many times can I write this? Oh, I have a better idea: Zusha is STILL sick. He hasn't really gotten any better for months. He'd get well enough to go to cheider for 4 or 5 days and then he'd get sick again.

Last week I took him to the doctor, and it turns out he has strep. The doctor prescribed antibiotics. I asked her if he really needs them or if he can do without. She didn't take the time to discuss this, just threw an, "Of course he needs antibiotics," over her shoulder as she left the room.
Strike one against her.

I followed her and reminded her that Zusha just had antibiotics for an ear infection several weeks ago, and I don't want him to have the same type again so soon. She said that she will give a different one, specifically for strep.

The receptionist asked me which pharmacy I wanted them to call the prescription in to. I said I'd rather bring it in myself. So they wrote one out to give me.

Now for a little background: the antibiotic that Zusha took for his ear infection 5 weeks before was Augmentin. I didn't know it then, but it's a very strong antibiotic. I was sick recently- so sick that I shocked the doctor- and she didn't want to give me Augmentin because it was too strong.
And Zusha's doctor went and prescribed that very strong antibiotic for my baby-- for his FIRST ear infection?!?!

OK, so as I was about to go fill the new antibiotic prescription, I noticed that it's for...... AUGMENTIN. (Strike two) The same super strong antibiotic he just had 5 weeks before. She TOLD me specifically that she will give something just for strep.
But instead she prescribed something that he just had, which
1. would cause him to build resistance to it
2. is too strong to use for an adult who was twice as sick as Zusha is
3. didn't work last time anyway.

I called her from the pharmacy, asking why she told me one thing but prescribed another.
Doctor: Oh, two months passed, it's safe to give again.
It's 5 weeks actually (Strike three)
Me: But you said you will give something just for strep!
Doctor: Remind me- did I say he had fluid in his ear?
Me: Yes.
Doctor: So the medicine will take care of both the strep and the fluid.
Antibiotics treat infection. They don't help drain fluid. Either she doesn't know it, or she thinks I'm stupid enough to fool, or she wants to use antibiotics to prevent infection... all bad, bad, bad. (Three strikes at once.)
Me: Can you please just prescribe something else?
Doctor: What would you like?
Who's the doctor here??!?! (I'm tired of counting strikes.)
Me: You told me in the office that you will prescribe something specifically for strep, and that's what I want.

Time to look for another pediatrician...
