What Does One Have to Do to Get Attention Around Here??

This child felt neglected...

...with all the brouhaha on around Adi. And he decided to get attention!

By getting bitten by a hamster. And by falling off a carousel in a new park we visited, landing on his bitten finger. It swelled up right away. I thought we'd have to go to the ER, but he stopped crying right away and didn't act hurt. The next day it was still swollen but didn't look like it was hurting. The day after that we went to the specialists with Adel and by the time we came home, the finger was white and pussy. :(
That bite had almost healed, but probably opened again with the impact.

But by then it was late and all doctors were closed. B"H there is a nighttime office open here in BP for such occurrences, so after a whole day shlepping around to doctors with Adi, I took Yaya and trooped off to the office 0.9 miles away. There was no bus in sight, so we walked. Both ways.

But it was nice. I got to spend a lot of one-on-one time with Gedalya... and he got fun toys to play with in the waiting room.
The doctor prescribed an antibiotic cream... it doesn't seem to have taken effect yet... I hope it will soon.

Another Phone Test

{Edit: I guess it works! Yay! Now I'll be able to post important updates as they come up... or just little things I want to share and will otherwise forget. Such as- when I was pregnant with Adi, I couldn't stand the smell of scented diaper disposal baggies. I switched to using food storage bags that were 75 for $1. Just now I finally got the courage to buy the scented ones again (100 for $1) and am happy to report no vomiting due to associated memories!}

X-ray Results!

After our neurologist told us to check Adi's clavicles (collar bones) we went to the radiology department. After a bit of a wait (they were consulting on which angles to get the x-ray done so as to minimize radiation... I am very grateful for the thoughtfulness) we entered the room. By then Adel was sleepy and not in the mood. Combined with having to hold her arms and head down in painful positions... well, she screamed more than I ever heard her scream before.
As soon as I picked her up, she was asleep in my arms.

The neurologist told me that Adi can't have any physical therapy until we clear this up. I, being too efficient for my own good, called Step by Step to report the findings.
Yesterday the neurologist called back and said the x-rays showed no breaks or healing breaks in Adel's bones. But now, Step by Step wouldn't take me on my word, because since a doubt came up, they have to clear it with the doctor in writing. Which is no big deal... but it cost me a whole bunch of extra phone calls that I could have avoided.

And the question remains... why can't Adel lift her arms? Why does she react in pain when her collar bone is touched? And why no reflexes in her arms?

Poor Adi stayed asleep through the transfer from my arms to the stroller, then to the car seat, out of the car seat and into my arms, being carried to the ENT's office, and then being transferred from my arms to my mother in law's lap. Whew! That was one tired girlie!

I'll summarize our ENT trip briefly. Don't want to relive it. In short, he's clearly not trained to handle kids. He didn't even have an exam table for babies. Dunno why they even accepted us. :? Maybe it had something to do with his office being totally empty... no patients at all!

The visit included him grabbing my hands and roughly poking them into Adel's head and body to show me how to hold her (my insistence that he just explain what to do fell on deaf ears until I screamed at him), which caused Adel to cry hysterically and wriggle (she sat perfectly and didn't make a peep at the audiologist who did the same exams), him not being able to check Adel at all and lying about what he supposedly saw, him pushing ear wax deep into the canal and refusing to clean it out, eventually cleaning it out when we told him we will go back to the audiologist tomorrow (he got scared that his lie will be uncovered.)

It was just awful. Never going back THERE again.
It accomplished absolutely nothing. At least this was the first appointment where no new issues were discovered. Heh heh. Not that there aren't any issues... I don't know. But this guy didn't uncover any, so that's a first. :) (Some black humor... just laugh along. :P)

Long, Crazy Day

So I didn't have time to set up email posting, although I had a few things I wanted to share.

As seems to be a pattern in our lives lately, no issues were solved, but more were discovered.

(A little background... at the evaluation it was discovered that she favors one side and that it seems painful for her to lift her arms. At the hearing test it was discovered that she has fluid in one ear and failed her hearing test.)

So this time, there were more discoveries. We came to the neurologist... she asked many questions and immediately recognized some dysmorphic features: prominent lines of the triangle between nose and mouth, little facial expression, ear shape, wide set nipples... all may be hints of a chromosomal issue, she believes. She was also very concerned about her high pitched cry but was relieved to hear her cry deeper when she was in pain.

She tested her reflexes with that little hammer. Her legs were great. Her arms had NO reflexes. She tried to lift them... nothing doing. Adel winced and started to whimper, eventually full out crying when the doctor didn't relent.

The neurologist tried to push on spots on Adel's upper arms, shoulders and collarbone and came upon a few spots that really hurt her to touch. She suspected that her collarbone was broken at birth and grew back wrong, so we went for an x-ray. Alternatively, it might be part of her chromosomal disorder.

She didn't want to do an MRI, B"H. It requires anesthetizing the baby and can be dangerous. She wants to wait to see the genetic testing results. If it's a known disorder, they will know what's going on with her brain without an MRI. If the tests are inconclusive, they will wait for her to get bigger and do an MRI.

More about the x-ray and the ENT appointment in an upcoming post.

Adi's Big Day- Lost Count Already

New car seat examined and set up? Check

Cute new crochet headband with humongous flower? Check

Adorable new denim dress (that I got for $1!) with sweet bloomers? Check.

All the papers prepared? Check.

Lunch and snacks for a full day on the road packed up? Check.

Cell phone charged and ready for the big day? Check.

Camera? Doublecheck! :D

Stomach ache from nervousness? Check.

A tefilla that today should shed some light on at least some issues? Triplecheck.

And it would be great if all of you kept us in your tefillos as well today as we see two specialist and hopefully make some headway. Daven for progress towards the correct diagnosis (wrong diagnoses are pretty common) and for Adi's cooperation... and for the tests to be easy for her.

We are leaving in about an hour. I will set up the blog so that I can make a post from my phone. At least, I will attempt to do so.
If there is anything major to report... any discoveries or leads... I will try to post. Otherwise, tune in tonight!

Yaya

My funny Yaya.

He's being so three lately.

And for the uninitiated, THREE IS WAY HARDER THAN TWO!!

Don't let his sweet looks fool you.

If any age should be called "terrible," it's the threes. No doubt about it.
But, I think we'll keep him. ;)
