Lovin' Those Scooters!

The boys are lovin' those scooters, and so am I!

Every once in a while, we take them along when we go out.

We got them this spring, and before long, the boys were cruising like pros.

Don't the scooters make my baby boys seem all big-like?? *sniffle*

For Zusha's birthday in the beginning of the summer, my mother got them light-up wheels for the scooters. We replaced the front wheel on each one with a light-up wheel. The motion activates the LED lights. We've used them a lot since then, but never in the dark... until today! We stayed out late and got to enjoy the light-up wheels for reals. :D
And there's a sweet little treat in it for me. The boys LOVE to zoom till the end of the block and back, and since now they are all sparkly, I don't have to keep my eyes glued to them. I see the two little lights in the distance and know they are okay. They have fun, get exercise, and feel free to ride without me calling after them. I get a peaceful walk with just Adi, one on one while the big kids are enjoying themselves. It's a win all around!

Speaking of Adi, this girl loves to watch her boys.

She watches, and then when she gets home...

Scooter grrrrl!!!

  1. We have the red radio flyer scooter too (and love it!) I'm surprised though--at your kids riding without helmets.

  2. Yes, you are not the first to mention that...
I feel that everyone makes a choice in what area they are super stringent and what they let slide when it comes to health and safety.
For us, it would be very cumbersome to drag along helmets. We are out for a long time every day and my carriage is often filled to capacity with shopping. It's hard enough finding a place to put the scooters when the boys want to take a break, forget about helmets! The heat isn't very encouraging, either ;)
On a bike, I have them wear helmets, but this I feel is different. They are much closer to the ground, in regular walking position, and they don't ride much faster than they run, so the danger is minimal.
To "compensate," I don't leave my kids outside of stores when I shop, which half of my neighborhood does, since I feel it's very dangerous. I don't let them walk to school alone at age 6, asking strangers to help them cross the street.
I think everyone picks and chooses in this way.

I'm glad you asked so I could explain!

  3. Hm..My Eli loves his helmet and would wear it all day--so I guess I'm not used to thinking of that. And for the record, I never ever leave my children unattended near stores--or even in stores when I've been told I could bring the stroller inside but leave it near the front (so I took my baby out and held him around the store, saleslady was upset, didn't want my baby to touch the merchandise... I've heard about it sooo many times and saw it for the first time ever a few weeks ago when I was on Lee Avenue Williamsburg. My 3 year old even asked me--"Mommy, where is the baby's mommy?"
And walking to school alone at age 6? asking strangers for help? That's a new one--woa! No way!!!

  4. Yeah, that's BP for ya. Everyone does it because they feel safe here. Well, this week there was a holdup in a bank by a criminal with a gun, right in middle of 13th ave. Police were chasing him around the neighborhood and he was shooting randomly. It's a neis no one was hurt. I shudder to think what could've happened to the unattended babies.
Obviously, I don't supervise my kids just to "compensate" for the lack of helmets... That was an attempt at a joke. :)

  5. I got it!
But do know that it is possible for a kid on a scooter (especially on an uneven sidewalk) to hit a bump, rock, etc. and flip a scooter over. I've seen it happen. kid flew over, hit her head (just a couple of stitches, could have been worse...)
