Not wrong, just not in depth. Boys have only one x chromosome, while girls have two. So if one is damaged, the other one still works. I dunno, but maybe Fragile X for girls is when both x chromosomes are damaged? I didn't ask the geneticist, but I plan on looking it up online.
I think Fragile X affects males more severely. I think that if a male has it, they are usually mentally retarded (that is what i heard from a developmental doctor). Do you have sisters with kids?
OK, from a website: "Boys are affected more severely than girls, because girls have another X chromosome, which usually does not have the mutation and can partially compensate for the nonfunctioning one. Boys have only one X chromosome (and one Y chromosome)."
Faigie- I don't have any siblings. DH has one sister who is not married. We have really small families, which makes it harder in this case. There is a mentally retarded family member, but pretty far removed. My maternal grandmother was married once before she married my grandfather. She had a daughter from that marriage (my mother's half sister) and this woman has a daughter with a disorder of some sort. I don't know if it can be related when the relation is so far removed.

ReplyDeletehow long until you get results?
ReplyDeleteHi, Esther. Thanks for commenting. :)
ReplyDeleteI actually forgot to ask this time, but it's usually about 5-6 weeks.
